Have you ever celebrated New Year’s Eve at the casino?

Wednesday December 3, 2008
I was talking with some friends who decided to spend this New Year's Eve at the casino. They asked me if I wanted to join them and were surprised when I said no. I don't like going out on New Year's Eve because you end up paying a lot more for much less than you would any other time of the year and you also have to deal with the crowds and the drunks. I have been to the casino on New Year's Day and found it to be very crowded as well. Many of the people had been there from the night before. Have you ever celebrated New Year's Eve at the casino? Vote in the poll or tell us about your experience in the fourm.

Be Wary of Losing NFL Teams

Sunday November 30, 2008
I love betting on football. Each week I pour over the stats and make my picks. I then compare them with the information in the Pro Football Handicapping Engine and MrNFL software programs that I use to help me make my final decisions. The software programs are helpful but you have to make some decisions that are not based solely on the stats, such as injuries and the weather. With the NFL season in the home stretch there is another important factor to look at in handicapping the games as well. You have to consider where the teams are in the standings. At this time of year there are several teams that are so far out of playoff contentions that they may have given up.

Now professional football players are supposed to be just that; professional, however they are also human and emotions can affect their performance as can the threat of injury that may have a bearing on their future contracts. A few years back I read The Dark Side of the Game by former NFL player Tim Green. In his 1996 book he admitted that like it or not there were quite a few players on losing teams that did not give their all on Sundays after their teams were eliminated from playoff contention. It is just one more factor to consider when making your picks this time of year.

Give the Gift of Knowledge

Friday November 28, 2008
The day after Thanksgiving kicks off the holiday shopping season and it is one of the busiest shopping days of the year. The press and media refer to is as "Black Friday" because it is a day when retailers make money from large sales, many of which are held early in the morning when most sane people are still sleeping off their meals and drinks from the previous day's celebrations. I don't have any desire to get up early to fight the crowds at the local stores and shopping malls in order to save a few dollars. I prefer to sleep in and then head to the poker room at my local casino. However over the last few years I have found that the casino is almost as crowded as the shopping mall on Black Friday so this year I skipped the casino and did most of my shopping online. It was a lot easier and I got to watch a few football games at the same time.

The hardest part about shopping is trying to find the right gift for the people on my list. Luckily many of them share my interest in casino gambling and there is a wide variety of products on the market including books and tutorial software that will help make them better players. If you have someone on your shopping list who enjoys gambling why not give them a gift of that will help them win the next time they visit the casino. Gambling related books, tutorial software an instructional DVDs make great gifts.

Atlantic City Tropicana Fails to Regain License

Wednesday November 26, 2008
The New Jersey Supreme Court upheld the Casino Control Commission's decision to revoke the license of the Tropicana hotel and casino. The Commission revoked the gaming license last December and ordered the casino to be sold. The former owners filed suit trying to regain their license and this was an obstacle holding back a sale. Of course in the years time the recession has had a major impact on the gaming industry and a sale may take a while.

IPhone Poker Cruncher Application Updated

Sunday November 23, 2008

A few weeks ago I reviewed the Poker Cruncher application for the IPhone and IPod Touch. In my original review I wrote that the only negative was not being able to display the results as odds such as 3:1. I sent a copy of my review to the developer and he agreed that this would be a handy feature and he planned to put it in the next update. That update has been released and you can now switch back and forth to see the results displayed as either odds or percentages. This feature has made the Poker Cruncher even stronger and although the price has increased a dollar to $4.99, it is still a bargain and well worth the price of the application

A Successful Coupon Run

Friday November 21, 2008
Each year I end my trip to G2E with a coupon run where I try to use up the remainder of the match play coupons that I have left from my Las Vegas Advisor pocket book of values and any other ones I have collected along the way. This year the book had three $25 match play coupons that I had not used and I had several $10 ones as well. I set out to play the $25 coupons first and I not only won on all three, I had a natural blackjack on two of them. I also played and won six out of seven of the $10 Coupons I played.

This was by far the best results I have had playing match play coupons. I usually come out a little ahead when I do these coupon rues but to win nine out of ten was phenomenal.

New Slots With Familiar Themes

Thursday November 20, 2008
This year as I walked around the floor of the G2E I noticed that many of the new slots had older themes. As I walked past the booth of slot maker Aristocrat I met up with a costumed shark who led me to a bank of slot machines. In front of the machines was a model who was handing out little rubber stress reducers shaped like a shark along with a shark shaped key chain/bottle opener. It took only a second to realize that the premier game being introduced was based on the movie Jaws.

The slot makers have concluded that even though many players like the new games, there are also many who are attracted to something they are familiar with. Basing a game on a popular movie, television show, or pop icon makes the game something that a player can relate to. Jaws, Dirty Harry, Star Trek and the Time Machine are just a few of the games I have seen of the floor of the G2E this year. Perhaps, a true sign of a cultural shift in our society is that there is now a slot game with an EBAY theme. I guess that shows hoe much the Internet has become a part of our life

Exploring the G2E

Wednesday November 19, 2008
I have been attending the G2E for the last several years and the show just keeps getting bigger each year. Even this year with the economic slowdown the show is as big as ever. I'm glad it is a three day event because there is no way I could see everything in one day. There are at least 1,000 slot machines and probably a hundred or more table games. I spent all day Tuesday trying some of the new slot games and a few new table games. There is still plenty more to see.

All of the major slot makers are there including: Aristrocrat, Ballys, IGT, WMS and a few of the smaller slot manufacturers. Each company has an area on the convention floor displaying their games. You can play the machines to get see how they look and check out the different features of each game. Most of the slot games have already been approved by the regulatory boards in many of the gaming jurisdictions and are ready for the casino floor. The majority of the games are the "penny" slot machines with 20 or more pay lines that allow the player to wager several dollars per spin. One game I saw had 250 pay lines. I asked the slot maker when they would stop adding lines and he told me it would only happen when the players stopped playing them.

The primary focus of the new games is entertainment and more pay lines means a higher hit frequency for the game. It does not matter that a "winning spin" can pay less than your initial wager. I think it is amazing that many players have accepted the fact that a spin that pays back less is a winning spin. Call me cynical but if I wager

Global Gaming Expo Starts Tuesday

Sunday November 16, 2008
The Global Gaming Expo (G2E) is the annual trade show for the gaming industry held in Las Vegas. Each year many new slot and table games are introduced at the show. Some of these find their way to casino floors and eventually become popular with the players. Other games never make it from the convention floor to the casino floor.

Last year the hot topic was a concept called Guaranteed Play where the players had the option to purchase a set number or hands of Video Poker. For $20 you would be guaranteed to play 80 hands of video poker even if you ran out of credits. The problem was that if you were even after playing out your 80 hands you were actually out you initial $20 that you paid up front. This idea made it to the casino floor at several casinos but it died a fairly quick death after players realized that it was not a good deal.

The G2E runs from Tuesday to Thursday this week and I will be attending to check out the latest in games and see what looks promising for next year and what might just be another guaranteed bad idea.
